Batik
This is Tjanting its a traditional tool used to poor the wax during Batik it is used like a pen, some have thin tips and some have larger ones. i had to be careful when using this as they get very hot when in the wax and also i had to be careful not to spill it on me, this could could make skin blister and it would be painful.
DO NOT leave the Tjanthing in the wax pot! this can cause it to over heat and burn.
This is the Batik wax pot it is used to melt the wax. This pot gets very hot so i should leave it unattended, i have to make sure the wax pot is on a heat mat just in case it burns the table, and i should never put my fingers into the pot when on even when no wax is inside due to it been very hot and i could burn myself. i must remember never to leave the Tjanthing in the wax. when turned off i have to leave the wax to cool and harden, if i remove the wax when its still hot i'm at risk of been burnt.
Rubber/ latex glover should be worn to protect my hands from any wax that might spill or splash out.
When i do Batik i should keep all work space clear in case anything spills and i should also keep water away if it get into the water it WILL start to spit this is very important as it is very dangerous. Hot wax can cause my skin to blister and it really hurts!
Latex Workshop
The workshop had many signs up to remind me of health and safety in the workshop,This is important because if the tutor was to leave to room for any reason i would be able to keep safe and if anything was to happen i would be able to get help from the right places.
It is important that i place my bags in the storage provided as if i left them in the way they could become potential trip hazards, its important that i stay safe in the workshop as i could be denied entry next time.
i have to wear sensible shoes at all time, if i don't have sensible shoes then i have to wear these very unattractive welly's. This is because if anything was to fall on my feet it will hurt and they just want me to be safe because in this workshop there is very heavy equipment that could fall on my feet.
Its important that I wash and clean all equipment after as little bits of clay could dry to the tools and could potentially hurt me or someone as the clay becomes sharp when dry.
Tools i had to use the first is a wire cutter that cuts the clay i had to be careful when using this as it is rough and could cut me if i don't use it safely, also to prevent getting cut by this i should wear rubber/latex gloves. The second images is of a paint brush this is not dangerous unless i use it in a silly way the second is a plastic carving tool used to carve into clay this is also safe unless used in a unprofessional way. Last is a metal scrapper this can be very dangerous, i had to use this to scarp the clay off the wooden board if i slipped and caught my hand or even someone else it could result in a horrible injury, when using this tool i must make sure i push away from me and stay in a safe area away from anyone in case i slip.
i had to wear aprons to protect my clothes from getting dirty and also if there was any acid it would protect my clothes from getting burnt.
This is the clay i had to use it is very heavy so i had to be careful when lifting and carrying it as it could cause me to have back pains or i could strain a muscle, if i were unable to lift the clay i should ask someone else to help to prevent any damage.
This is the cupboard were i has to put my latex it is important that you shut the cupboard doors as it does something to the air to make the latex dry faster. i had to be careful not to trap my fingers in the door or hit myself when opening the door, I know its silly but these thing could happen.
the most important thing is that i clean up after myself because if the work space get to crowded things could fall the table and hurt someone things could spill and ruin mine and others work. This image also shows the fire point sign in the event of a fire i must leave the work room in a orderly manor and go to the safety point outside of the college ground until i'm told it is safe to go back in.
This is the sink, above the sink is a first aid kit (does not contain plasters for allergy reasons) a first aid kit is place above the sink in case any injury there are anti-bacterial wipes to clean the cut and also bandages, its important to have a first aid box the only bad thing is there are no plasters this is for allergy reasons. there is soap to clean hands and over the sink is mesh to stop things blocking it if this was not there it could potentially cause a small flood or overflow then they would be a slip hazard.
there is a separate bowl to rinse out plaster this is so it does not bock the sink for the same reason the mesh is on it. i have to be careful not to knock this bowl over as the water will go all over the floor and would create a slip hazard.
Fire Extinguisher to extinguish any fires that may occur
There is no eating or drinking in the print room because it can damage the machinery and also your work. If there is any ink on your hands
safety equipment must be worn in curtain parts of the work shops due to exposure to harmful chemicals, i had to wear this equipment to expose my silk screen board.
There are loads of signs around the workshop to keep me reminded of health and safety
First aid box in case i cut myself.
safety equipment for when using the ovens its important i use them to protect myself from getting burnt.
so i know the floor is wet and to be careful when walking around.
windows are always open in the workshop due to chemicals.
weights are heavy and i have to be careful using them because if they fall i could get really hurt.
I have to be careful when using the sewing machine as it can go really fast i have to keep my fingers away and make sure there is a foot guard on. i have to keep my hair tied back so it wont get caught.
irons get really hot when i use it to press my fabric i have to be careful not to burn myself or set fire to my work.
